Toastmasters meeting of the U-CAN-SPEAK Club at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch

Challenges and Achievements

The meeting on Monday 4th March both challenged and entertained all those present.

It began with John Bascand’s icebreaker speech, in which he gave us a background to his studies and sporting interests (playing cricket at St Albans), before he regaled us with a brief account of a recent family wedding in Japan.

In the second prepared speech of the night, Timm took the role of a speaker at a press conference. Timm delivered a powerful argument for increasing club input into spending Toastmasters’ marketing funds, after which he gave an excellent demonstration of how to tackle a public question and answer session.

The meeting then changed tack with Jessica ably presiding over the Monday night Annual General Meeting. Andy’s report showed that the club is financial health, while Timm was able to announce a stellar performance in terms of numbers of member achievements.

At the end of the AGM, Sam then led the Table Topics session, which proved something of a mock confessional, as speakers tackled the challenge of coming up a novel back story for whichever anonymous indiscretion that they pulled out of the hat. Advait then provided a comprehensive evaluation for the night, and awarded Steph the rubber chicken for her splendid table topic on the rights and wrongs of foisting the blame for a spilt drink onto someone else.
