Daniel making a gesture towards the screen

Vigorous Body Language

A very warm welcome to our numerous guests tonight! We were treated with two Ice Breaker speeches from some of our newest members, Richard and Rory. I was amazed to hear what both of them had already experienced in their lives, be it foreign countries and cultures, accidents or challenges at school. Our evaluators Ross and Vivek were right saying that both Richard and Rory displayed great talent and vast potential as speakers.

Daniel’s speech project focused on the use of slides, props and other visual aids. There are indeed hobbies that do not rely on any sort of screen at all! Daniel introduced us to the skills and techniques required for building a realistically looking model of an aircraft.

In line with tonight’s theme, Timm presented the educational on body language from Toastmasters’ Better Speaker Series.  Given the large number of new members and visitors to our club, Timm focused on techniques to hiding nervousness and faking confidence in each of the three dimensions stance, gestures and facial expressions. Also check out his article on the topic!

Congratulations to our all our guests who participated in Timm’s educational and Jess’s impromptu speech challenge! Unbelievable how our visitors kept speaking for an entire two minutes (!!!) with ease. They used stories, weaved in personal experiences and confidently maintained the thread. These skills are exceptional. They would all make a great contribution to our club. We’d love to welcome them back as new Toastmasters at U-CAN-SPEAK!
