Pranks & Our New Ombudsman

We had another successful meeting, which finished early! Finishing early was mentioned by our Ombudsman Julius as an improvement that members desired from last week’s surveys. There was lots of activities for everyone to get involved with.

Paul led a ‘warm up’ session which asked members the most mischievous thing they did as a kid. This led to many interesting stories which included mention of water bombs and train horns.

Tania gave a speech from the CC manual regarding how to get your ‘Dream Job’. She began by comparing the pros and cons of university against the ‘real world’. This included no more budget food items, no spending more money on alcohol than food. This segued nicely into the options we have once we leave university. The best option was to get a job that uses the obtained degree at an international company so that you earn money and travel, “Taking the bull by the horns”. She provided some excellent tips to get that dream job which are:

  1. Register to Grad Connection
  2. Research the company
  3. Use the companies values to plot your cover letter
  4. Research how to do interviews
  5. Smile – “Fake it until you make it”.

Jono’s speech, titled ‘An unexpected match’ was from the CC manual and was about his experience after winning tickets to a Crusaders vs Sharks match. Buying potato wedges at a pub put him in a draw to win the tickets, which he won! “Wedges can make your dream come true”. He described heading to the game, including his difficulties with buses. He left the match early for the bus, but the bus waited at the stop until the game finished.

There were a number of awards handed out. Timm and Jono were awarded the Competent Communicator award. Greg was awarded the Advanced Communicator Bronze award. This is the highest achievement awarded in our club this Toastmasters year.

We held a SGM to appoint further members to the Exec. Rachel Gardner, Tania and Julius were appointed Vice President Public Relations, Secretary and Ombudsman respectively. Note that the Ombudsman is a new position created in the Exec that involves meeting feedback.

Sam, our Table Topics master for the evening had some amazing topics, which revolved around what we would do if we had to flat with certain people including the flintstones, teletubbies, vampires, goths and emo’s, death metal fans . For example, John and Rachel described flatting with the Kardashians and John Key respectively. By the way, the Rubber Chicken was given to Sam, so well done!

Thanks everyone for making it an amazing evening. The look forward to seeing everyone next week with the meeting theme of Europe.
